1.Can you tell me the story of how you joined
Petra?
I was playing for a local
artist, Devin Webb, and a friend told me that they heard that Petra was looking
for a bassist, so I set up a tryout, and they liked my playing.
2.What is your music background?
My mother taught me piano when
I was a child, and at age 8, I started playing the cello. I was in different
orchestras throughout school, up through college. During my third year of
college, I started playing bass guitar for our school jazz band, and I also
played for some rock bands until college was over. I eventually moved to
Nashville to try to pursue music.
3. As a bass player who are the bass players
that you used to look up? Do you have any skill to write music or do you like
just to play bass?
I used to look up to Billy
Sheehan of Talas/Mr. Big, and now I like to study Victor Wooten. I have not
written much music over the years, but lately I have been writing more, trying
to improve my skills. I co-wrote a song with Bob Hartman on the Jekyll and Hyde
album, and I hope to do that on the next Petra album also.
4. What are the Pros and Cons of being a
musician?
It is a lot of fun, traveling
around and playing for lots of people, but the future is very uncertain,
especially if you have a family.
5. How about your bass guitar, is it a custom
made?
My bass is custom made. I
designed it, then had someone make the body, someone else paint it, someone
else make the neck, and then I put it all together. The thing most people
notice about it is the neck - it has fanned frets trastes-frets, so they are
not parallel. This lets the strings all be different lengths and helps the
instrument feel more even across the range of the strings.
6. How do you feel being a member of a band that
have history and repercussion around the world and the most important that have
influenced virtually an entire generation of christian young people for the
Lord?
I am very happy to be a part
of a band with such a wonderful history. I grew up with Petra myself, and it
feels great playing the songs I listened to so many times. Those songs
encouraged me as a Christian as I know they do lots of other people.
7. How do you feel working with Bob Hartman and
John Schlitt?
They are great guys - we keep
making better and better memories with each other.
8. Do you have a favorite album? Which one? Is
there a song that you feel identity or maybe this song has spoken more in your
life?
The Jekyll and Hyde album is
my favorite Petra album in years. I think my favorite album from the past is
probably On Fire. I was hooked from the first note of the first song. My
favorite song, though, is probably He Came, He Saw, He Conquered because it
always makes me feel so joyful.
Though we don't play it much live, I love playing Think Twice in concert. I wish
that song could be re-recorded today - it wants to rock harder than the album
let it.
9. Since you entered Petra what has impacted
your life?
Since I joined Petra, I got
married to a wonderful girl, and this has impacted my life more than anything.
It's quite a good change to be able to share my life with someone.
10. Did you participate of the Spanish recorded
playing or doing back vocal? Do you speak Spanish?
I do not speak Spanish, but we
got a great Spanish language coach to help us record the vocals to Jekyll &
Hyde En Espaņol. So I did record on that album even though I had no idea what I
was singing.
11. Are there plans for a tour in Latin America
to released Jekyll & Hyde in Spanish?
I certainly hope we can tour
Latin America, and maybe we can learn a song or two in Spanish.
12. Could you say a message for all Latin
Americans and for all Petheads too?
We would love to come back and
play again! (And eat the good food!)
